Tree Selection Tips

Choose a tree that will grow well in the type of soil that you have. To find your soil type, go to:
SoilWeb: An Online Soil Survey Browser or download the smartphone app “SoilWeb”.

Select the right tree for the right place. Always make sure you know how tall and wide the tree will grow to avoid planting in a location that will interfere with buildings, power lines, pavement, etc. If your tree will grow taller than 30 feet, do not plant it within 25 feet of powerlines.

Pick the right tree for the intended purpose, whether it be for shade, a windbreak, wildlife, erosion control, landscaping, or aesthetics.

Be sure that the tree is cold hardy for your location. St. Lawrence county varies from growing zone 4a to 5a (-20° F to -15°F).

Tree Planting Tips

  • Once you receive your tree seedlings, plant them as soon as possible. If the trees cannot be planted right away store them in a cool, dark place out of the wind until you are ready to plant. Make sure to keep the tree roots moist, but not saturated.
  • Before digging, notify utility companies by calling 811 or submitting an online request a few days before you plant so that buried lines can be located and marked.
  • Dig a shallow, broad hole that is 2-3 times wider than the tree's roots.
  • Place the tree at the proper height, be sure to find the root collar and plant the tree at a level height with the root collar.
  • Back fill the planting hole with the existing soil, packing the soil gently, but firmly to reduce air pockets
  • Thoroughly water with at least 5 gallons of water after planting and at least once a week for the remainder of the growing season.
  • Mulch around the tree. Place 2-4 inches of mulch, 1-3 feet around the base of the tree. The mulch should not touch the trunk of the tree.
